Do I need a visa for the gap year / sabbatical placement.

Yes, you do need a visa. Details will be provided by an Africa Sabbatical representative at the pre-departure meeting or will be sent to you via email.

Where can I find information about Vaccinations?

You would need to contact your GP or a tropical health centre for information. It is important to have some vaccinations done to protect you against malaria, tetanus etc.

What is the weather going to be like?

There are two seasons in Ghana, the rainy season and the dry season. Expect temperatures of between 23 - 34 degrees celcius depending on the time of year you undertake the placement.

Where will I be staying?

You will be staying within a family who will welcome you as one of their own and will endeavour to look after your immediate needs. We expect you to adhere to the rules of the household, as every family is different and has different rules. We don't impose any guidelines, except to ensure you are comfortable and fed well.

Where will I be working?

Once you get to your destination ie Ghana or South Africa, the co-ordinator will determine where they believe will be suitable for you, after discussing the options, unless you have chosen a specific industry, then that will be arranged before you leave.

What type of clothing will be required?

As the weather is hot in Ghana and for most of the year in South Africa, you will need to only take summer clothing. However in South Africa, they do experience winter, but it isn't as cold as it is in the United Kingdom, so you may need a jacket for the cold months, but check the weather forecast before you leave.

Do I need to register at the British High Commission?

We recommend all volunteers register at the British High Commission. The co-ordinator will arrange for this when you arrive.

Is there a mobile phone network available?

Mobile phone services are readily available in Ghana and South Africa. Although the pay-as-you-go service is the most commonly used facility. The co-ordinator will explain the different networks and you can choose which network service you would like to utilise.

Are Cashpoint machines available?

We recommend taking cash, as the cashpoint machines are relatively few in Africa, especially in Ghana. For more information about do's and don'ts, check out the tips we provide for Gappers in our pre-departure meeting.
